Panpipes are named after the god Pan, the faun (a half-man half-goat). Neanderthals are thought to have made versions of the flute. Hotteterre designed a new kind of one-keyed flute. About 300 A.D. clay whistle flutes are found in Mexico and in 1100 people in the West start playing side-blown flutes.

Although the wood used in violins is already dry, minute changes in water content...

Therefore don't let the name intimidate you when trying a cello. Stradivari made over 600 violins and about 50 cellos. It is rare that you see a rib crack on a violin or a viola. One of the most common beliefs in choosing an instrument is that the more you pay the better the tone. With age the wood hardens and becomes more resonant.
