Business consultants are individuals or firms with expertise in business procedures, practices and policy. Organizations of all types use consultants, and these consultants examine these organizations from a broad operational perspective applying a variety of skills to achieve a specific outcome, solution, or result. Through analysis and study, consultants provide problem resolution and prevention solutions related to business operations, infrastructure, and performance. Consultants have many roles, varying from a supportive one within an existing team, to providing temporary leadership over an identified problem area, to other independent activities conducted at the request of the organization. This category has been divided into three areas to reflect the many functions and roles within the business consulting profession. The top level is divided by some of the various specialty or focus areas typical to the business consulting industry (e.g., business formation, financial, management, manufacturing, outsourcing, etc.). The second level contains a variety of industry specific subcategories (e.g., construction, energy, engineering, science and industry, security, etc.). Within the lowest level is a list of closely related "See also" categories that may contain other types of consultants. Before you submit your site please take the time to look around the category to ensure that your site is appropriate to this category. Also, be sure to review the general guidelines for the Business categories. The editors reserve the right not to list your site, and to delete it after its addition. Multiple submissions may be considered when appropriate (for example, a site that contains valuable resources pertinent to multiple subcategories) but repeated submissions, especially to inappropriate categories, will not be tolerated. Please, submit only to those categories most appropriate to the content of your site.
Robotics is a term coined by Isaac Asimov to describe the field of science involving robots and related technologies. So what is a robot? The word comes from a 1923 Czech play called R.U.R. and described autonomous, humanoid robot servants. The original Czech word was robota, which means "servitude or forced labor". According to the Syrius Cybernetics Corporation of Douglas Adams' Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a robot is "your plastic pal who's fun to be with". A more conventional definition is, "A mechanical device that sometimes resembles a human and is capable of performing a variety of often complex human tasks". There are many other definitions, some a bit too narrow and some far too broad. We try to be as inclusive as possible, accepting sites about hobby robotics, industrial robotics, even those about the radio-controlled entertainment vehicles of "Robot Wars". Enjoy our selections. And if you don't agree with some of our choices, rest easy in the knowledge that someone else out there wouldn't agree with yours.

"Physics is the study and application of the fundamental laws of nature, including the laws of motion, gravity, electromagnetism, heat, and microscopic interactions. These laws govern the behavior of objects at all scales, from the smallest subatomic particles to the entire observable universe. In between, physicists study nuclear reactions, the interactions of atoms with light, properties of solids, chaotic dynamics of fluids, and the evolution of stars and galaxies, among many other applications."

If this doesn't tickle your fancy, there is always the quote from Rutherford: "In science, there is only physics; all the rest is stamp collecting."

Chiropractic is a method of treatment used by Chiropractors. Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions which are due to mechanical dysfunction of the joints, particularly those of the spine. Chiropractors believe that many health problems are due to misalignment or subluxation of the joints in the spine and that this leads to problems with the nervous or neurological system of the body resulting in symptoms, pain, disease and ill health. By adjusting the joints of the spine or other joints of the body they help restore normal function. They treat people who have had accidents or sports injuries and those whose conditions may have been brought on by stress, lack of exercise, poor posture or illness. There are a number of different chiropractic methods of treatment. Some chiropractors also offer massage, advice on nutrition, diet, lifestyle, exercise and ergonomic advice.
...Informatics is an emerging discipline that has been defined as the study, invention, and implementation of structures and algorithms to improve communication, understanding and management of medical information. The end objective of biomedical informatics is the coalescing of data, knowledge, and the tools necessary to apply that data and knowledge in the decision-making process, at the time and place that a decision needs to be made. The focus on the structures and algorithms necessary to manipulate the information separates Biomedical Informatics from other medical disciplines where information content is the focus." Aamir M. The study of operations research (OR) is concerned with mathematical methods and tools for solving problems relating to the allocation of scarce resources subject to constraints. Frequently these problems have to do with determining the least cost or greatest profit possible for a cost or profit function subject to constraints such as capacities and required amounts over a very large number of variables. Important problems within this space include minimum cost routing problems, network maximum flow or minimum cost flow problems, and machine scheduling problems. The growing trends in OR increasingly utilize applications of more than one technique and involve individuals from other disciplines. Moreover, they involve a blend of "hard" and "soft" as well as a mixing of different "hard" or "soft" techniques with the increasing use of multiple methods within one piece of analysis. A creative thinking must look in detail at how those from disciplines outside of OR can come to work in the organizations on multi-disciplinary studies. Those who have come from such backgrounds, clearly share their perspectives and experiences. The field of OR is always changing. Its changes are driven by the technology it uses and that it extends, and the applications that it affects.

Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that critically examines women's roles, achievements, and experiences, both historically and cross-culturally. Women's Studies brings to light valuable information about women in the family, at work, in the arts, in politics, and in the sciences--information that traditional scholarship has overlooked. Women's Studies explores the relationship between cultural definitions of feminine behavior and the realities of women's lives. It considers the ways class, race, ethnicity, and age shape the female experience. Women's Studies examines the ways in which gender -- our notions of masculinity and femininity -- is socially and culturally constructed rather than determined by biology alone. Uniting all Women's Studies inquiry is the effort to understand and explain the inequality between men and women and to envision change. The discipline began as an academic field in the 1970s with connections to popular feminist movements in the 1960s.

Calculus is a branch of mathematics concerned with two types of functions: derivatives and integrals.

The derivative calculates the rate of change of the function at a point on a curved line. This formula also works for a straight line, as well. A derivative of a function is written by adding a apostrophe like this: f'(x). One of the applications of derivatives is to determine velocity and acceleration of an object in motion.

Integrals measure the area under a curved line graph, such as a half circle. The integral symbol looks like a flattened S.

Derivatives and integrals are related in that they are inverse functions of each other. That means the operations will cancel each other out, such as taking the square root of a squared number will give you the original number.

Applications of integrals include calculating areas of plane regions or surfaces, as well as calculating volumes of solids.

Both derivatives and integrals are defined by using the concept of a limit. An example of a limit is where you have the equation 1/x. If you take x to be very large, then 1/x gets closer to 0.

Encyclopedia Britannica's says that "the chief concern of information theory is to discover mathematical laws governing systems designed to communicate or manipulate information. It sets up quantitative measures of information and of the capacity of various systems to transmit, store, and otherwise process information. Some of the problems treated are related to finding the best methods of using various available communication systems and the best methods for separating the wanted information, or signal, from the extraneous information, or noise". The study of information theory is also concerned with the definition of notion of information in a general sense and with a unified information theory that is supposed to contain all the statements of existing information theories.

According to Aristotle, rhetoric is "the faculty of observing in a given case the available means of persuasion." In contemporary terms, "rhetoric" is the social science that focuses on how to use language to create understanding and to change attitudes or behaviors. The earliest known works on rhetoric predate Aristotle, and rhetoric was an important part of a young Greek male's education to be a civic leader. Aristotle's theories were widely adopted and refined by rhetoricians of the Roman Empire, and later by Christian scholars. For over 1,000 years -- from about 600 A.D. to about 1800 -- rhetoric was one of the three liberal arts studied by every educated person. (The others were grammar and dialectic.) Around 1900, "rhetoric" became primarily the study of how to write effectively, while "speech" dominated college curricula as the study of effective persuasion. Today, these divisions are much less clear, but "rhetoric" is often distinguished from "communication studies" by a greater emphasis on criticism and practice, versus empirical or laboratory studies. In current usage, "rhetoric" has four connotations: 1. "Empty rhetoric." The popular use of the term to mean using words to confuse, bully, or obscure the issue. 2. Writing skills. Many departments of rhetoric focus on writing, especially technical writing. 3. Rhetorical theory. There is also a body of theory on how rhetoric works, some of it overlapping with literary theory. 4. Rhetorical criticism. The application of rhetorical theory in order to understand why a speech (or ad, or song, or whatever) was or was not persuasive.

Botanical Gardens and Arboreta are scientific institutions that acquire and maintain living collections of plants for the purposes of research and education. They perform the same function for plants as Zoos and Aquariums do for animals.

Typically, to belong within category Science:Institutions botanical gardens and arboreta must have a full-time scientific staff, an herbarium and library, and a catalogued collection of thousands of plants. Although botanical gardens and arboreta may also have a public viewing area, in which case they may be listed as well under Public Gardens, it is the presence of a viable research faculty using an herbarium or herbaria which distinguishes botanical gardens and arboreta from public gardens. This tends to make botanical gardens and arboreta larger in size and more dedicated to preservation of plant taxa than Public Gardens, however size or reputation are not the determining factors. Universities with herbaria do not constitute botanical gardens, even if there is a botanical garden on campus, and even if there is a research program involved, but are listed instead under Science: Biology: Botany: Education. The reason is that University botanical research falls within a traditional academic structure dedicated primarily to teaching.
